Do you live and breathe data? Love data wrangling, statistical modeling, and creating beautiful data visualizations? Desire to play a part in furthering JPL’s data-driven decision making initiatives to support our amazing planetary, Earth science and space-based missions? We are looking for a Business IT Data Scientist to do just that.

The Enterprise Business Information Services (EBIS) Division maintains stewardship over the ever-evolving Business IT portfolio supporting the Laboratory's robust and complex business processes. EBIS manages the full systems lifecycle across all major business processes, provides technical services and support, and strategically partners with the Laboratory's communities. Key organizational initiatives include a business intelligence program, data analytics, and adopting agile methodologies and tools.

This exciting opportunity for the Business IT Data Scientist engages both the Enterprise Business Information Services (EBIS) Division Office and Caltech’s Audit Services and Institute Compliance (ASIC). Will work with a team of data scientists on Big Data and Analytics projects within the business IT services domain. In addition, the position will be a team member of the CIO’s Chief Technology Officer Big Data/Analytics working group. The role requires a detail-oriented Big Data Scientist who loves discovering trends where none were visible before. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who possesses a strong desire and experience implementing, maintaining, and some development of a program of predictive analytics.

Under the guidance of the lead Business IT Data Scientist, an EBIS manager, and (at times) ASIC management, the Business IT Data Scientist will be responsible for implementing a program within the business domain for analyzing complex, large-scale data sets used for modeling, data mining, research, and predictive analysis purposes. This will include creativity, tenacity, curiosity, and technical skills. Most importantly, the position must possess a strong passion to answer business questions working collaboratively with functional business units/personnel and business IT staff. The Business IT Data Scientist will use skills in data gathering and data “munging”, visualization, creative data mining, and computer programming to make data driven decisions and data driven products, and will give exciting presentations where the data paints a compelling future.

Will use excellent interpersonal skills, professionalism and self-awareness. The ability to communicate comfortably with all levels of staff and management is a must.



  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Mathematics or related discipline with a minimum of 3 years of related experience; Master’s degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 1 year of related experience
  • Working knowledge in one or more of the following areas: data science, statistics, analytics, programming, data mining, databases, data integration, and communications
  • Basic statistical knowledge
  • Knowledge of data visualization principles
  • Knowledge of data extraction using SQL
  • Experience cleansing, transforming, and integrating real-world data using tools such as R or Python
  • Experience effectively visualizing data using tools such as Tableau and communicating the data in a manner that diverse audiences can understand and utilize
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Attention to detail with focus on accurately analyzing data and validating the results
  • Ability to think creatively and to work well both as part of a team and as an individual contributor
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive data and/or subjects


Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of applicable industry and/or academic practices and standards in data science and analytics
  • Understanding and application of principles, theories, concepts, tools, and techniques in integrating, analyzing, and reporting on multiple large and diverse data sets; creative data mining; analytics, and statistics
  • Strong mathematics and statistics skills
  • Effective presentation and storytelling skills
  • Ability to blend math, algorithms, programming, and an understanding of human behavior with the ability to combine information systems to find answers to interesting questions from the data
  • The ability to create new prototypes with the creativity and thoroughness to ask and answer the deepest questions about the data and what secrets it holds
  • Experience in Big Data tools such as Hadoop, Spark, Cassandra, Splunk, etc.
  • Coursework or practical experience with data mining, predictive analytics, prescriptive analytics, building algorithms, and NoSQL
  • Some proficiency in Cloud Computing such as such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google App Engine, and/or Rackspace
