As a Senior Data Scientist on the Data Science Solutions team, this individual will be responsible for building advanced data science and analytical solutions that help HBO better understand and grow its best in class television and film services. This position will leverage expertise in designing and building image and sound recognition models to help HBO audiences discover and connect with new hit television shows that resonate with their tastes and interests. Partnering with the analytics capabilities team they will ensure that content insights can be leveraged throughout the organization to drive HBO business strategies.



  • Lead the development of data science solutions that help HBO make smarter content decisions across development, scheduling, marketing, and digital platforms (including HBO NOW, HBO GO and Key outcomes sought are subscriber growth, increased engagement, and program level performance improvement

  • Mine HBO and other third party data to better understand how and why consumers make their entertainment choices

  • Work with analytic capabilities and IT teams to transfer knowledge and processes into production environment

  • Contribute to other analyses – cross-team, research, programming, scheduling, marketing, distribution, strategic finance, etc.

  • Be a thought leader in the adoption of new analytic approaches or tools in content optimization



  • Bachelor Degree or higher in quantitative field of study (mathematics, physical sciences, statistics etc.) from an accredited institution

  • Inquisitive, conceptual thinker comfortable working on complex problems at the cutting edge with limited definition of scope or guarantee of expected outcome

  • Experience applying machine learning in a professional environment in the areas of image and acoustic pattern recognition. Experience in deep learning is a plus

  • Strong background in analytic programming (R, SparkR, Python, SAS) and data manipulation (SQL) in a big-data environment

  • Proven technical abilities, but must be capable of communicating complex analyses effectively to varying internal and external stakeholders, of varying seniority

  • Proven success when partnering with engineering and business teams; focus on outcomes and business impact

  • Capability to work on multiple projects simultaneously with limited supervision balancing priorities as necessary

  • 5+ years of relevant experience

  • Position is based in New York
