The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is NASA’s lead center for robotic exploration of the solar system. Our core competency is the end-to-end implementation of unprecedented robotic space missions to study Earth, the Solar System, and the Universe.

The Instrument Software and Science Data Systems (Org. 398) Section within JPL consist of multidisciplinary teams of engineers and technologists who provide expertise across the domains of instrument operations and science data systems.

 

We Are Responsible For

  • Safely controlling JPL remote sensing instruments.
  • Transforming data collected by these instruments into scientific measurements and preserving them for future analyses.
  • Providing context and understanding to the measurements.
  • Making the measurements and related information accessible to a broad and global user community: scientists, operations, decision makers and society at large.

     

Our engineering teams build and operate high performance data processing, management and analysis systems capable of handling petabyte scale datasets in support of science discovery, research, operations and applications. They support JPL and NASA missions, as well as other science-based projects. Our research and technology development teams create new onboard and ground based technologies for data processing, analysis, modeling, reasoning, visualization, management, access and analytics that are infused into our data systems.

Responsibilities

Will be a member of the Machine Learning and Instrument Autonomy Group and will report to the Technical Group Supervisor. Will collaborate with group task leads to develop novel machine learning applications for NASA science and engineering data. Will interface with hardware and software engineering teams to ensure compatibility and functionality. Will support filing NASA New Technology Reports and documentation of code implementation.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 4 years related experience, or Bachelor's with 6 years experience
  • Significant knowledge and experience with C and Python languages as well as one or more of the following: Matlab, Java, Perl, shell scripting
  • Exceptional modern software engineering skills on major projects, unit testing, end to end validation
  • Demonstrated ability to lead team of algorithm researchers, coders, and stakeholders to achieve moving target
  • Emphasis on modularity and code clarity for ease of maintenance by non-developers
  • Demonstrated capability to write fast, highly optimized code for specific computational hardware
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Thorough understanding of the Linux OS and revision control systems (CVS, SVN, especially Git)
  • Excellent communication skills to understand user needs, negotiate requirements, and summarize trade-offs

     

Desired Skills

  • Familiarity with probability and statistics, linear algebra
  • Machine Learning experience: sklearn, scipy, Apache Big Data suite, openCV
  • Skill at numerical algorithm especially for optimization of speed and/or memory footprint
  • Data Exposure: Geospatial / space-based data, Natural Language Processing
  • Architecture Experience: cloud-based & distributed, stream-based, Apache Big Data suite, open source
  • Track record of collaboration with scientists, researchers, or other non-computer-science stakeholders
