The Senior Data Scientist will extract actionable insights utilizing statistical, algorithmic, mining and visualization techniques and will develop models and optimized control methods leveraging operational and customer data sets. Deliverables will include developing a deep, data-driven understanding of our customers; and developing improved models, dispatch and control algorithms for connected devices including energy storage.

The position location is Richmond, CA.



  • Work with internal and external product, marketing, engineering, and scientific teams to frame cross-disciplinary problems, both technically and within the business context.
  • Perform data wrangling to develop congruent and reliable datasets from heterogenous sources of varying quality.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis to gain a deeper understanding of the problem.
  • Construct solutions applying techniques from statistics, machine learning, or optimization.
  • Write production grade modeling software; collaborate with software engineers to implement algorithms in production.
  • Analyze experimental and observational data and clearly communicate findings.
  • Support ongoing development of techno-economic modeling software.
  • Provide input to ongoing product development and planning / strategy activities.

Total is seeking an extraordinary Senior Data Scientist to join our small, dynamic San Francisco Bay Area based software and IoT product innovation hub. This is a lead role in the team, which focuses on the optimized operation and aggregation of distributed, connected energy resources at the ‘grid edge’ to deliver value to our customers and unlock new revenue streams. The Senior Data Scientist will be engaged with the broader Total data science team; with top tier academic partners within joint research projects; and with product, business and marketing teams at Total affliates, particularly at SunPower where the team is hosted.


Profil recherché


  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or other related quantitative field. Exceptionally strong candidates with a BS and relevant work experience welcome.
  • 5+ years hands-on practical experience with data mining, statistical analysis, machine learning, quantitative and qualitative analytics and optimization algorithms.
  • End-to-end experience with data, including querying, aggregation, analysis, and visualization.
  • Expertise in pattern recognition and predictive modeling (time series analysis, logistic regression, decision trees, etc.). Keen aptitude for large scale data analysis with a knack for identifying key insights from data.
  • Fluency in Python, experience with Python backend frameworks (Django, Flask) a strong plus.
  • Experience with other programming languages and tools / libraries particularly R, Matlab, Scikit learn, Tensorflow, Keras, MLlib etc. a plus.
  • Experience with deploying and managing production code on AWS.
  • Experience in deploying real world solutions in Hive, Spark and other Hadoop Technologies in Cloud and In-premise.
  • Familiarity with the technical and economic characteristics of distributed energy resources such as solar, energy storage, and controllable load and experience working with data generated by these technologies.
  • Experience in the field of connected devices / IoT a strong plus.
  • Great communication skills, able to synthesize and present complex technical and non-technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience and interest in leading a small team a strong plus.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, comfortable interacting with a globally distributed team across multiple mediums (face to face, email, conference call, chat, etc.).
  • Autonomous self-starter, able to thrive in a fast paced and continually changing environment.
  • Excellent English Language skills; French language skills a plus.
  • Willing to travel internationally up to 25%.
