The Data Science Manager develops and practices data science projects within the GCD statistics team. The candidate will leverage large external and internal databases containing information relevant to BD’s human subject investigations to support strategic requirements, drive innovation, business-making, and the setting of strategies and priorities. Development of use cases with a potential to support projects or translate into product and service development across BD will be an important aspect.  This role will be key in bridging opportunities between internal BD stakeholders and external research parties – KOLs, academic and business.

S/he masters the domain knowledge to develop and implement all aspects of such projects, including data quality control, data organization and management, automated data processing (e.g. data wrangling, pipelines, and transformations), application of appropriate statistical, machine learning, mathematical models, and algorithm development, creation of insightful visualizations, and presentation of results. This role will work with the Sr. Manager Data Science and individuals from the statistics team (statisticians, statistical programmers, data managers) as well as Medical Affairs (MA), Information Systems (IT), Health Economics & Outcomes Research (HEOR), Research and Development (R&D), Global Health (GH), and Digital Health (DH) to identify and utilize internal and external sources of data that will provide information, analytics and insights to GCD and other functional teams.

 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Be a statistical and data science expert and apply appropriate methodology in solving multidisciplinary problems in data mining, statistics, predictive modeling and machine learning.
  • Work on large scale real-world health data for evidence generation and drive innovation via the use of data driven insights to business functions.
  • Build and advocate data-driven evidence that help cross-functional partners improve outcomes.
  • Drive the interaction and partnership between the GCD statistics group and the business units. Ensure close cooperation in identifying and defining analytical needs and generating business insights and evidence.
  • Drive data stewardship activities for the GCD statistics team including strategy for accessing, linking and analyzing internal and external large databases.
  • Participate in the evaluation of current and future data assets including partnerships for sourcing data and analytics tools.
  • Provide leadership on matters pertaining to the utilization of data, implementation of the analytics strategy and tactics. Ensure a broad understanding of the value of analytics and insights to product value demonstration.
  • Support and advocate development of reusable tools and infrastructure (code base, cloud architecture/use, team workflow) to support and grow data science capabilities.
  • Create value for GCD and the broader BD by collaboratively designing, executing, publishing, and presenting high-impact research results germane to healthcare resulting from data science projects.  

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Minimum of MS, PhD strongly preferred, in Statistics, Data Science, or related quantitative discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with PhD and 8 years of experience with MS in relevant areas of Data Science and proven capability in applying appropriate statistical methodology in solving complicated problems
  • Accomplished academic background in health data applications; hard evidence of extensive biomedical collaborations and publication record preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong technical skills: Experience in R, Python, SQL, Spark, Cloud services (Azure, AWS)
  • Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills, proficiency in data interpretation, delivering messages with impact to internal and external customers
  • Intellectual curiosity and agility
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team setting
