Position Summary

The Data Scientist is a basic technically role in Analytics and also requires a small level of business skills.  According to company needs at any given time, this teammate will perform any small and well defined statistical analysis using techniques that are needed by the business with heavy supervision.  This Analyst performs the analyses while learning and developing their ability and business experience.  This role will also develop the skills to communicate effectively on multiple levels, using highly technical language with other Analysts and translating technical results clearly and effectively.  Performs primarily small scale statistical analyses or small-scale modeling projects with high levels of supervision and direction.


The Analytics COE is charged with improving enterprise decisions through the translation of data.  As such, COE focus on the highest most impactful use of data and advanced analytics to improve decisions.  The department works will all other departments and organizations (Marketing, Finance, Real-Estate, Operations, Etc.) to identify those opportunities and perform its analysis.  Given the breadth of responsibility and diversity of the advanced analytics that need to be performed these individuals must be able to accomplish all types of advanced analytics (too many to list in this form).

  1.  Statistical Analysis / Data Science (100%):
    1. Adapt educational knowledge to the business using Python or SAS and Microsoft Office and learn/develop business skills.
    2. Modify and run code others wrote.
    3. Write small chunks of code for the scope of work being done.
    4. Learn to identify data quality issues and discuss their resolution with others in Analytics.
    5. Learns data preparation techniques from more experienced analysts and has limited involvement in resolving data preparation issues
    6. Creates basic transformations of data with involvement from more experienced analysts
    1. To satisfy the need of the organization and project, learns how to perform these types of analysis as needed:
      1. Sample Selection / Stratification
      2. Experimental Design
      3. Categorical Data Analysis
      4. Linear Regression
      5. Non-Parametric Analysis
      6. Multivariate Analysis
      7. Survey Design and Analysis
      8. Survival Analysis
      9. Time Series Analysis
      10. Forecasting
      11. Optimization
      12. Simulation Models
      13. Decision Trees
      14. Heuristic Models
      15. Algorithmic Models
    1. Translating analytical results
    2. Create and present results to manager and more senior Statistical Analysts / Data Scientists
    3. Learns how and creates simple technical documentation of basic analyses.
    4. Perform small scale statistical analysis or small-scale modeling projects with collaboration from other analysts and high amounts of supervision and mentoring from Senior Statistical Analysts / Data Scientists.
    5. Partner with more experienced Analysts on all modeling projects.

Requires formal training to learn how to adapt academic knowledge to business situations.



  • Bachelor's degree in Analytics, Statistics, or Mathematics fields and 1-4 years of Analytics experience or MS degree in Analytics, Statistics, or Mathematics fields
  • 1 year of programming experience in a statistical language (Python, SAS, R). Python Experience preferred.
  • Limited educational knowledge of applying statistical/mathematical techniques in business units/focus areas (Operations, Supply Chain, Real-Estate, Pricing, Marketing, Credit Risk management).
  • Academic Statistical ability, able to apply techniques as appropriate for medium data sets with <= 10 variables (columns)
  • Able to analyze business data using two sample mean and proportion tests, 1-2 way ANOVA, and 1-2 predictor Logistic Regression.
  • Must be able to learn storytelling and how to explain complicated statistical analyses, techniques, and results to non-statistical audiences.
  • Must be capable of working with and communicating directly with SME's in other departments and internal teammates
  • Capable of learning how to write simple technical documents of small and well-defined analytics without assistance.
