Data Visualization Engineer - The Washington Post

As an FBI Computer Scientist, you will be part of a highly collaborative investigative team working to prevent cyberattacks that include counterintelligence plots, fraud, bank robberies and more. Experienced Computer Scientists will:


  • Ensure the accurate, effective and timely accomplishment of efforts within unit strategies and operational goals.
  • Formulate strategies for the vertical and horizontal integration of intelligence, as well as relevant IT and data systems, tools and other assets on behalf of the Directorate of Intelligence and in line with the enterprise’s vision, goals and IT strategy.
  • Interact with mission users to define, scope and document user requirements to support the unit and all advanced analytic missions.
  • Interact with FBI and the United States Intelligence Community program and project managers.
  • Use IT and data techniques to meet mission needs.
  • Incorporate, integrate and/or adapt computer science technologies and best practices for intelligence systems, projects and programs to include product planning and external specification generation.
  • Design, develop, test and evaluate analytical tools and systems for updates and advances to support the unit and all advanced analytic missions.
  • Translate between code languages to adapt tools.
  • Document all code and data elements with relevant comments, guides and explanations; post to an FBI shared repository or other applicable enterprise repository.
  • Provide guidance on resource management (equipment, personnel and cost).


About You

  • You’re comfortable working across our software stack as the need arises.
  • You enjoy nurturing a codebase over a lengthy period of time.
  • You’ve worked on hard deadlines before and are comfortable with making trade-offs in order to hit them.
  • You prefer collaborating with a mix of technical and non-technical people.
  • You have at least 3 years of experience with a combination of data visualization and engineering but we would prefer that you had experience with both.
  • You have some experience working with election and geographic data.
