Research AST, Earth Sciences Remote Sensing - NASA

The Earth Science Branch at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is seeking Remote Sensing Scientists for multiple positions to conduct research, enable applications, apply data analysis techniques, or develop and apply advanced instrumentation to solve challenging Earth science problems supporting MSFC's Disasters, SERVIR, IMPACT, and microwave remote sensing research and analysis programs.

Responsibilities

  • As a Research Physical Scientist, you will actively participate in scientific investigations with other scientists through the analysis of data obtained from satellites, airborne, ground-based observing platforms.
  • You will conduct intensive research investigations and / or application studies directed towards discovering, disseminating, and applying new and expanded knowledge in Earth and atmospheric sciences for societal benefit.
  • You will serve as a subject matter expert relevant to the Earth science mission and research responsibilities of the Earth Science Branch, working effectively as a member of a diverse research team.
  • You will formulate and lead the development of proposals for new research activities, help lead and execute funded projects, and document accomplishments in the peer-reviewed literature.
  • You will communicate scientific results through presentations and the scientific peer review and publication process to document, validate the quality of scientific research, and obtain recognition as a technical expert by the scientific community.
  • Your technical work involves setting research goals, the design and implementation of technical approaches and tool development, budgeting, project scheduling, synthesis of results, and documentation of processes and outcomes.
  • For disasters applications, you will use optical and radar remote sensing expertise to monitor natural disasters and develop and transition products to response agencies across the country and to improve societal resilience to future disasters.
  • For the SERVIR, you will specialize in remote sensing of surface processes with demonstrated relating applications and capacity building in water-related disasters, agriculture, land use to improve resilience in the developing world.
  • For the IMPACT project, you will use expertise and advanced computer skills to develop and test cutting edge approaches to improve the utilization of Earth science remote sensing data, services, and software by other agencies, academia and industry.
  • For microwave remote sensing research projects, you will utilize active and passive remote sensing expertise to develop algorithms to derive geophysical parameters from airborne, satellite, and ground-based measurement platforms for process studies.

    • This is a term appointment not-to-exceed 2 years, with potential to be extended for up to a maximum of 6 years or made permanent.

    Qualifications

    In addition to the basic education requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

    To qualify for the GS-13:

    Specialized experience includes performing duties such as making regular contributions to a research team with some guidance and direction; conducting research which required the development of new computer analysis techniques to solve challenging problems; supporting the submission of peer-reviewed proposals in response to technical solicitations; and preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication to document research results as demonstrated in a publication record.

    Desired expertise includes experience with the development and use of optical, infrared, microwave, or synthetic aperture radar measurements systems and analysis techniques for detailed scientific investigations.

    Education

    Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Life Science, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field.

    Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

    *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science that provided in-depth knowledge of the following: (1) theoretical foundations and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; and (2) essential mathematical and statistical techniques. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

    U.S. Engineering degrees must have been awarded from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
