Software Engineer, Autopilot Analytics - Tesla

Palo Alto, California
  • Jobs Rated

Data is deeply embedded in the engineering culture at Tesla. We rely on data – lots of it – to improve autopilot functionality, to design self-driving features, and to educate the world on the possibilities of an autonomous future. Each vehicle in our fleet introduces an opportunity to learn about the complexities of the road, and in return, we are able to improve the safety of our vehicles for customers.

We're the Autopilot Analytics team, a small group of data scientists and software engineers that help the Autopilot team understand how customers are using autonomous features in the wild. We help engineers through direct support, by building data pipelines and visualizations that drive feature design and development.

We're looking for a talented engineer to join as a foundational member to scale how autopilot telemetry can improve our engineering efforts. Your work will affect hundreds of thousands of Tesla customers, as well as support the initiatives of many internal Tesla teams.

Half of your time will be dedicated to hands-on data analysis and visualizations, while the other half will be spent building data pipelines, tools, and applications to automate those analysis. Given the responsibilities, strong communications are a must.

  • Work with stakeholders to take a vague problem statement, refine the scope of the analysis, and use the results to drive informed decisions
  • Write reproducible data analysis over terabytes of data using cutting-edge open source technologies
  • Summarize and clearly communicate data analysis assumptions and results
  • Build data pipelines to promote your ad-hoc data analyses into production dashboards that engineers can rely on
  • Write clean and tested code that can be maintained and extended by other software engineers
  • Operate and support your production applications
  • Keep up to date on relevant technologies and frameworks, and propose new ones that the team could leverage
  • Identify trends, invent new ways of looking at data, and get creative in order to drive improvements in both existing and future products

  • Strong proficiency in Python, SQL
  • Strong foundation in statistics
  • Experience with data science tools such as Pandas, Numpy, R, etc.
  • Experience building data visualizations
  • Experience writing software in a production environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills to help refine problem statements and figure out how to solve them with the available data

Nice to have

  • Experience building data pipelines
  • Experience building web applications
  • Experience building machine learning models in a production environment
  • Experience with continuous integration and continuous development
  • Experience with AWS services
