AWS Support is a one-on-one, fast-response support channel that is staffed 24x7x365 with experienced and technical support engineers. The service helps customers of all sizes and technical abilities to successfully utilize the products and features provided by Amazon Web Services. The AWS Support organization is global with 17 locations around the world. Unlike most support organizations, AWS Support is a self-standing business with revenue and P&L responsibility and one of the fastest growing businesses within AWS. AWS Support Capacity Planning team is responsible for optimizing labor staffing to ensure customer delivery. We develop accurate predictive models, provide staffing guidance and enable service delivery for thousands of our customers. With better forecasts, we drive down hiring and training costs, enabling the optimal staffing of associates to meet customer promise across our services.

As a Sr. Data scientist, forecasting, you will have an opportunity to both develop advanced scientific solutions and drive critical customer and business impacts. You will play a key role to drive end-to-end solutions from understanding our business and business requirements, identifying opportunities from a large amount of historical data, building prototypes and exploring conceptually new solutions, to working with partner teams for deployment of forecasting models. You will collaborate closely with business stakeholders to understand business drivers and bridge your plan vs actual. You will be at the heart of a growing and exciting focus area for AWS Support.

He/she Will

A successful candidate will be a problem solver who enjoys diving into data, is excited by difficult modeling challenges, and possesses strong communication skills to effectively interface between technical and business teams.The successful candidate will work in lock-step with multiple business teams, AWS Support Ops, Finance and Leadership.

  • Implement statistical methods to solve specific business problems utilizing code (Python, R, etc).
  • Improve upon existing methodologies by developing new data sources, testing model enhancements, and fine-tuning model parameters.
  • Directly contribute to the design and development of automated forecasting systems.
  • Build customer-facing reporting tools to provide insights and metrics which track forecast performance and explain variance.
  • Collaborate with SMEs, Data Engineers, and business leaders to define product requirements, provide analytical support, and communicate feedback.
  • Presenting critical data in a format that is immediately useful to answer questions about the inputs and outputs of Forecasting systems and improving their performance.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications

  • Master/PhD degree in Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field and 4+ years of industry experience.
  • 4+ years of relevant working experience in an analytical role involving data extraction, cleaning, manipulation ((e.g. SQL, Hadoop/Hive).
  • 4+ years of experience with building, iterating and validating statistical models (e.g. R, Python).
  • Expertise using SQL for acquiring and transforming data.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, influencing and partnership skills.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and convey rigorous mathematical concepts and considerations to non-experts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with processing, filtering, and presenting large quantities of data.
  • Experience with causal inference, applied time series modeling or machine learning forecasting applications.
  • Fluency in R, Python or a similar modeling language and in SQL.
  • Working knowledge of visualization tools (e.g. Tableau).
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and convey rigorous mathematical concepts and considerations to non-experts.

  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, highly collaborative, dynamic work environment
