The Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in statistics / data science, one at the assistant professor level, and one at open rank, starting in the fall semester of 2020. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in statistics, applied mathematics, mathematics education, and pure mathematics. The department is housed in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The college has a growing statistics program, an interdisciplinary applied mathematics Ph.D. program, and a new interdisciplinary B.S. degree in analytics and data science, the latter with faculty from statistics, applied mathematics, and computer science. In addition, the college is currently developing M.S. and Ph.D. programs in data science.

Qualifications: The successful candidates will have an earned doctorate in statistics, or a discipline closely related to data science or statistics, including applied mathematics and computer science. We seek applicants who have demonstrated the ability to teach statistics courses at all levels to students from a variety of backgrounds. Such courses might include theoretical, applied, and computational statistics as well as data science related courses. Applicants are expected to be committed to interdisciplinary research through engagement with the numerous research institutes on campus. For example, NH BioMade is an NSF-funded, $20M/5-year, interdisciplinary research project on biomaterials manufacturing and design. The grant has additional funding to support both a research assistant and faculty summer salary to engage in the research activities. A strong computational background is desirable. Also, at least one of the new hires is expected to have significant research accomplishments in data science or related areas. This hire will be expected to contribute substantially to the college's effort in data science program development and to seek collaborations with members of the emerging community of data science faculty members from statistics, applied mathematics, computer science and analytics.

Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the positions include (1) teaching undergraduate and graduate statistics courses for majors and non-majors (2) developing new courses in the intersection of statistics and data science or related areas (3) guiding student research including thesis supervision in statistics and data science (4) advising undergraduate and graduate students, (5) developing a successful research program that includes collaborative work with colleagues and graduate students and active pursuit of external funding to support research activities, and (6) providing service to the department, college, university and profession.
